Something big happened today.
I stepped out of Palermo Soho.
For those of you who know me, this is huge. In my two months here, I haven’t ventured out of Buenos Aires’ culinary and shopping mecca too many times.
“Why did you leave the best place in South America?” you might ask.
Two words. Fierro Hotel. Palermo Hollywood.
Run by Irish chef Ed Holloway, UCO Restaurant at the Fierro Hotel is pretty well known in BA’s culinary circles. It’s known for sophisticated, fresh food, and an extensive wine collection curated by Andrés Rosberg. The time had finally come for me to go and see what all the buzz is about.
Fierro Hotel describes itself as a “foodie hotel.” Their Instagram page has tons of food
porn pictures, and my mouth started watering after just glancing at them. UCO had been on my list for a while, but I was scared that it would burn a huge hole in my pocket. So you can probably imagine my delight when I found out they have a 2 course lunch, paired with wine for 245 pesos ($18). Dreams do come true.
So, off I went to UCO Restaurant.
It was lunch time and I was flying solo which I didn’t really mind. I had a ton of work that day and I needed some time for myself. I got a table with a great view of the restaurant, which itself is beautiful, and the outdoor garden patio.
After being seated, I was promptly encouraged to try either the 2 (starter+main) or 3 (+dessert) course lunch. I didn’t have much time so I decided to go for two courses. The sommelier recommended a fresh ceviche paired with a white wine. Being a huge fish fan, I jumped at the suggestion, and 15 minutes later, I had this beautiful bowl of ceviche in front of me:The fish was super fresh. I was told that it was caught a few hours earlier so I wasn’t too worried about eating raw fish. The flavors were light and the textures were amazing. The corn kernels added some great crunchy contrast to the softness of the fish.
It came paired with this lovely Collovati Torrontes white. It was the perfect accompaniment to the ceviche.
For my main course, I ordered beef. No surprises there, I’ve become a huge carnivore in my time here.
I don’t remember the exact name of the cut, but it was great. The beef was cooked medium rare (closer to the rare side), and was really juicy.It came on a bed of mashed sweetcorn and fried potatoes. Thankfully, there were some vegetables on the plate to help me feel a bit better after eating all that meat.
And of course, it came with some amazing Argentine Malbec. As you can see, this was a 2013 Petit Trez Malbec from Mendoza. It perfectly balanced the heaviness of the beef, although drinking so much wine in the afternoon probably wasn’t the best idea since I had to work on building a mobile application shortly after. 😛
Overall, the service and food were both excellent. UCO has some really talented sommeliers who clearly know what they’re doing. If you’re not looking to stuff yourself silly like I did, they have a great a la carte menu too which I’ve heard has a pretty mean fried chicken burger.
